THE MODEL "A" FORD
One of the pleasures of old age is the ability to reminisce the past. Age seems to give a person a much broader understanding to the events and things remembered. The past seems to meld into a scenario of ones own choosing. All things being relative, we are therefore justified with our perspectives!
Usually while stretched out in my recliner I am much more receptive to the art of reminiscence and plain old wistful thinking.
My Mama used to call it a good case of the druthers. She would get that far away look in her eyes and say, "If I had my druthers, I’d want me" ……….and express her heart’s desire!
So stretched out the other day, near ‘bout in hog heaven, while reminiscing the past, I got myself a good case of the druthers.
Of all the things in the world I wanted more than anything else was a brand new, genuine, Model A Ford Roadster. Yes sireeee! A Model A with a rumble seat, white wall tires and spoke wheels. That was my druthers!
The Model A Ford was the ideal car for a young man in my day. It was designed as a simple piece of transportation, intended to get you from here to there, even over the roughest of terrain and rutted roads. It would actually run very well on high proof mountain moonshine and if anything went wrong you could fix it with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers. It was a marvel to behold!
I hear a sweet voice calling,
It lures me back in time.
When things were quiet and simple like
And I was in my prime.
I think of all the things I did
When life was one big spree,
But most of all, I think about
That Roadster car and me!
I’d drive up to the dance hall door
While the fiddler fanned the breeze,
With Cripple Creek or Old Joe Clark
And park beneath some trees.
And when the dance was over
The girls would fight to see
Which one would ride to Lovers Leap
In that Roadster car with me!
My Daddy always told me
There was no such thing as stuff.
And until Henry made the Model A
I believed him well enough.
Then stuff was all around me
As plain as it could be,
In the shadows of the moonlight
And that Roadsters car and me!
We were a legend in our time
And our range was far and wide.
With a peak performance every time
We gave those girls a ride!
I remember every shady lane
Every stop from A to Z
With that big, thick, woolly blanket
And that Roadster car and me!
With an UUHGUI horn and a rumble seat
And a dollars worth of gas.
A coon tail flapping in the breeze
And snap on isinglass.
With running boards and white wall tires
We were a sight to see.
A jug of apple brandy
And that Model A and me!
